Nothing Short of Miracles

The time ticks on as I lay awake,
your sleeping body tangled in the space next to me.
My mind is swimming in a sea of thoughts -
only some of which will be granted explanations.
The last few weeks have opened my eyes
to a entirely different way of seeing how things work.

As my heart pounds on;
as you continue drifting through slumber;
and as the television plays reruns of shows almost forgotten;
we are together not in conscious reality -
but instead we share something so much more.
The wonders you are capable of making me feel
are nothing short of miracles.

The night carries itself into morning,
and my insomnia is greeted
by the eight a.m. Seattle drizzle,
a leg that is half asleep from lack of movement,
and good morning kisses
from the only man I know
who can leave me breathless.

If Those Sheets Could Talk

We never said it,
but it was the most obvious thing we never noticed.
We danced around the subject,
promising each other things
that we knew wouldn't become reality.
We tried,
we really did.
Crossing fingers, shooting stars, prayers before bed,
it took everything we had to keep it alive.
Our hearts were in it for the long haul,
but our minds told us differently.
I don't think we could ever work out
the way two people should when they love each other.
I've accepted that you are not what I need,
and at this point you're not what I want either.
My heart has limitations on bruises,
you know.
I had to push you away
and I know it's for the best.
You twist my arm behind my back
until I cave from the pressure,
and I can't keep putting my heart in that kind of danger.
I don't know where you're going from here,
and it's no longer my concern.
You live your life,
and I shall live mine.
No more late night phone calls
to apologize for old actions,
which always leads to secrets kept
in between the sheets of your bed.
It's not that I regret what we had,
or hate you for what you've done,
because I could never.
I just can't keep trying to build something
that we both know damn well
is only going to collapse
when we reach unstable ground.
